Membership Information

Who May Join

Any currently enrolled student, or a faculty or staff member with a RecSports membership, is eligible to become a member of UTSC.

How to Join

To join the club, contact the Vice-Commodore for more information, attend one of our Recruitment Meetings, or join us at our next SATURDAY SAIL. You may come to one Saturday Sail before you must pay dues.

Membership Requirements

All new members, regardless of previous sailing experience, must attend an instruction class. This class not only covers sailing theory, but club policies and procedures as well. In addition, a simple written test that each member must take is administered at the end of the class .

A swim test is required by RecSports for all UTSC members. This consists of swimming approximately 75 meters and treading water for 5 minutes. A personal flotation device (PFD, or life vest) must be worn at all times by members not yet checked out on the boat they are sailing, regardless of swimming ability. PFD's are not required to be worn on keelboats, but Texas law requires one life vest to be on the boat per person on the boat. This law applies to all boats. After checkout, wearing a PFD while on a boat is STRONGLY recommended, but not required. However, the OD, at his or her discretion, may require a life vest to be worn by all sailors.
