Description of Position
• Conducted in-class Instruction Classes during recruiting (~4 fall, ~4 spring, ~3 summer) and a couple more during each term.
o Quiz is 32 questions long, but you are welcome to change as you desire. 70% is passing. If someone fails, you should contact via the email on the quiz and give on the water training. When you feel confident in that person’s basic sailing skills, then pass them on the quiz.
o Keep a record of those who passed the quiz. (Dan Barad has the records for 2004-2005) You do not have to actually keep the copies of the quizzes.

• Hands-on Instruction
o It’s a good idea to be at the first 2-3 Sat Sails as the instructor, to show sunfish rigging and give additional on-the-water training. It can be annoying always being the instructor, so remind others (officers and knowledgeable sailors) to help. Also, teach people how to sail on the sunfish and not on a more advanced boat.
o Offer to help people learn knots or to rig correctly if they’re having trouble.
• Philosophy on teaching
o Terminology can be overwhelming, so only teach the essentials in the class. You can teach more at Sat Sails.
o If people get frustrated, remind them that most sailors tend to learn things the hard way, and usually not from a class, but on-the-water.
o The minimum basic sailing skills are being able to sail to windward, tack, right a capsize, and know where the wind is coming from.
o It’s amazing the number of sailors in the club that do not know right-of-way rules. Drawing pictures on the board in the class seemed to help, but going over them on-the-water helps too.
o Helmsman and Helmsmonkey can be used interchangeably.
o Piracy should be encouraged.
o Smile.
o I always wanted to design a more intermediate course to teach to those who have checked out on sunfish (or maybe lasers) that covers jib work, sail shape, quick stop, etc. I encourage you to try to do this (perhaps with another experienced sailor), if you have time.
• Attend board meetings
o Heckle as much as you can.
